Dominic Calder Death, Obituary – Family members, friends, and communities throughout Saugus, Woburn, and surrounding Massachusetts towns are mourning the loss of Dominic J. Calder, who passed away on June 9 at the age of 53 following a long and courageous battle with cancer. His passing has left a profound void in the hearts of those who knew and loved him, while also inspiring countless reflections on a life defined by devotion to family, hard work, friendship, and service to others.
Dominic passed away at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston after facing his illness with remarkable strength, determination, and resilience. Throughout his battle, he remained focused on the people and passions that mattered most to him, continuing to be a source of love and support for his family and friends.
Born in Malden and raised in Woburn, Dominic built a life rooted in family values, dedication, and community. He was the beloved husband of Diane (Iacovone) Calder, with whom he shared 25 years of marriage filled with love, partnership, and countless cherished memories. Their enduring relationship served as the foundation of a family that brought Dominic immense pride and joy throughout his life.
Above all else, Dominic was a devoted family man. His greatest accomplishments were not measured by professional achievements but by the love he shared with his wife and children. He was a proud father to his three sons—Dominic J. Calder Jr., Joseph M. Calder, and Luke T. Calder—who were the center of his world. Whether cheering from the sidelines, offering guidance, or simply spending time together, Dominic made it clear that his family always came first.
His legacy also lives on through his father, Walter Calder of Billerica, as well as his brothers Michael Spinelli, Paul Scott, and Anthony Calder, and his sisters Christine Napolitano, Tracy Allen Calder, and Malissa Morris. He was preceded in death by his mother, Elizabeth (Benedetto) Calder, whose memory remained close to his heart throughout his life.
Professionally, Dominic earned widespread respect through a remarkable 30-year career as a mechanic. Known by many as a true “Jack-of-All-Trades,” he possessed an extraordinary ability to repair, build, and solve problems. Friends, family members, and customers often marveled at his mechanical skills and practical knowledge, trusting him to tackle challenges that others considered impossible.
More importantly, Dominic never hesitated to use those talents to help others. Whether fixing a vehicle, repairing something around a home, or lending advice, he was often the first person family and friends called when they needed assistance. He found genuine satisfaction in helping others and took pride in being someone people could depend on.
Beyond his work, Dominic embraced life with enthusiasm and appreciation for the simple things that brought him happiness. He loved spending time outdoors, fishing, enjoying football, and making memories with those closest to him. These passions provided opportunities for connection, relaxation, and countless stories that will continue to be shared among family and friends for years to come.
Athletics also played a meaningful role in Dominic’s life. As a young man, he was a talented football player who competed at the semi-professional level with the Seminoles. His love for sports remained strong long after his playing days ended, and he carried that passion into his role as both a coach and dedicated supporter of his children.
Some of his happiest moments came while watching his sons compete in sports. Whether coaching from the sidelines or cheering from the stands, Dominic was always present, offering encouragement and support. Those experiences became treasured family memories and reflected the pride he felt in his children’s accomplishments.
As news of his passing has spread, an outpouring of tributes and condolences has emerged from friends, neighbors, former teammates, colleagues, and community members. Many have shared stories highlighting his generosity, humor, work ethic, and willingness to help others. These reflections paint the picture of a man who lived with purpose and whose influence extended far beyond his immediate family.
The loss of Dominic is deeply felt, but those who knew him find comfort in the legacy he leaves behind. His life serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of family, friendship, hard work, and kindness. He demonstrated through his actions that true success is measured by the lives we touch and the love we share.
In honor of Dominic’s memory, his family has requested that donations be made to the Colorectal Cancer Alliance, supporting efforts to raise awareness, provide support, and advance research for those affected by colorectal cancer.
